How to flash CyanogenMod

Get the full Cyanogen experience on virtually any Android device

CyanogenMod has official builds for a huge number of devices – phones and tablets – and unofficial builds for pretty much everything else. In order to install it (or flash it, as it’s called), your device will need to be rooted and have a custom recovery installed. Check the forums at xda-developers.com for info on rooting your device.

  • Download the ROM

Head over to download.cyanogenmod.orgto check for an official ROM, or go to your device’s forum at xda-developers.com to look for an unofficial build. Download it straight to your device, saving it in the internal storage.

  • Make a backup

Turn your phone off and reboot into Recovery mode (hold power and volume-up keys). Now navigate to the Backup section and follow the instructions to create the backup. It’ll take several minutes, so don’t touch your phone until it’s done.

  • Flash the ROM

Once the backup is done, you may want to save it to your desktop. Next, move to the Install section of the Recovery software and locate the CyanogenMod ZIP file you downloaded. Select it and confirm you want to flash it when prompted.

  • Set up CyanogenMod

Don’t touch the phone until it’s finished; best to keep it plugged in, too. When done, reboot – it may take a few minutes. Now you can set up your phone, adding Google account details and creating a Cyanogen account if prompted.
